Practice Before Practice

The Mason Studio Cultural Hub presents a live development model in which emerging designers contribute to real-world building outcomes prior to entering the profession.

Through a collaboration between Toronto Metropolitan University’s fourth-year interior design cohort, Mason Studio, and HOEM , academic proposals were developed, refined, and advanced toward implementation within an active student housing project. Rather than positioning education and practice as sequential stages, the initiative treats them as overlapping systems. The result is a distributed authorship model that generates fresh cultural thinking for developers, meaningful authorship for emerging designers, and new forms of collaboration across sectors.
